Recreational & Sports Fishing Tourism is Booming

In this day and age, not many sports can go ahead. Covid-19 has put a stop to most things, but one hobby that is thriving right now is fishing. Fishing can be socially distanced, and it helps people to get outside for long periods of time, so they can take in the sunshine without having to travel far. In fact, most people are close to a fishing lake, making it even more viable for those who are sick of being cooped up indoors. What’s interesting is that fishing is also having a huge impact on tourism. As things begin to return back to normal, people are looking to take their hobby and compete professionally. Bass fishing alone is more popular now than it has ever been and it’s time for hotels and hospitality industries to capitalize on this.

Recreational Fishing is Growing due to Covid-19

Recreational fishing is growing due to Covid-19. People have taken up fishing as a way to substitute their other hobbies and interests, which they may not have been able to carry out due to the current situation. What’s interesting is that fishing appears to have stuck with most people. More and more individuals have seen what a fun and exciting experience fishing can be, and they are now looking to take it further afield by staying in hotels that are close to lakes or even participating in tournaments. The growing demand for fishing gear and tackle is also a clear indicator that more and more people are taking their hobby much more seriously and this is creating a much more diverse fishing landscape that is more unique than it ever has been. Take kayak fishing for example, there are more searches being done for that now when compared to a few years ago. This shows that people are specializing and honing their skills, and the pandemic has helped to spur this on faster than ever.

Sports Fishing Tournaments Bring Worldwide Tourism

Sports fishing tournaments are a fantastic way to bring more and more people to a particular location. Hotels that are close to fishing lakes or ponds are able to capitalize on this by advertising their convenient facilities for fisherman who may be visiting the area, but it’s not just hotels that stand to benefit from this movement. Cities and tourism departments also stand to benefit.  After all, fishing is a universal language. People often travel up and down the country to fish, and it’s also possible for people to travel across the world so that they can catch fish that might be on their bucket list. Kayak fishing tournaments and specialized events really help to drive home the effects of tourism, as it attracts experienced fisherman who may be up for a challenge, or even fisherman who want to catch a particular type of fish when out on the open waters. Fishing is a competitive sport, and by creating specialist events, the effects of tourism can be multiplied tenfold.

Tips and Tricks for Hosting your Own Tournament

If you want to host your own tournament, then you have to make sure that you get permission. Depending on the lake, you’ll have to get a permit from the agency that is in charge of the lake. If it is a private lake, you will need to contact the township to get permission. If you do this, then you can make sure that no other tournaments are going to be held on that lake and you can also make sure that you get the whole thing to yourself.

Get the Right Supplies

It’s so important that you get the right supplies. If you want your tournament to be a success, then you don’t need to get a great deal of stuff. You need to make sure that you have some weigh bags though. Ideally, you’ll have between 5 and 10 of them if you are having 30 or less boats. The sound system you choose will also help you to make sure that your event goes off without a hitch. Try and get a good system as this will help you to announce the teams. If you’re not going to have power, a megaphone should work. Trolling motor tape will help you to designate the boats that are taking part in your tournament.

Official bump boards are good as you can do a weigh-in to try and check short fish, and scales are ideal if you want to work by weight. Ideally, your scale will be 1 foot by 1 foot, but these scales will most likely need power.

Other things you’ll need include registration forms. Having a pre-register helps and you can even use Google Docs to work with everything too. Weigh-in sheets will help you to write down the weights for each team, and again, if you use Google Docs you will be able to share this with everyone.

Setting Rules

You’ll also need to set some ground rules before your tournament takes place. You have to make sure that you do everything you can to make sure that you model the rules of other successful tournaments that might have taken place in the past because if you do this, then you will soon find that you are able to familiarize everyone quickly. If you have no idea what rules to work by, then try and look online to find some guides.

There you will find information like how long you want the tournament to be, how many participants you should have, how to determine the winner and even what you can do to break up the day. This could include having a raffle or even some food served. Either way, good organization is the key to any good event, so you have to make sure that you put in the work to make sure that everyone is on the same page throughout your team. Hosting an event might sound daunting, but you have to remember that most of the time, teams are going to be preoccupied with fishing. The only thing that you have to do is provide some structure to the day.
